The former Mid-Canada radar surveillance line was erected in the 1950s from east to west in Canada.
In Quebec, the portion of the line totaled a little more than forty sites spread between the Labrador border
and Hudson Bay. The sites were abandoned in the 1960s and transferred to the Government of Quebec
in 1965.
The objective of the project is the restoration of the sites through comprehensive environmental
rehabilitation.
The following activities will be carried out:
– the removal of residual materials and hazardous materials, their packaging and temporary
storage in a space that complies with the regulations;
– the removal of equipment inside buildings;
– the dismantling of pipes and old fuel tanks;
– the dismantling of infrastructure (building, shelter, heliport, others);
– packaging of dismantled materials on a dedicated surface;
– excavation of contaminated soils;
– Characterization of excavation pits;
– Packaging of contaminated soils on a dedicated surface;
– Off-site transportation of dismantled materials and contaminated soils to developed sites in
Schefferville, Kuujjuarapik or TransTaiga. These developments will require agreements between
the construction managers and the receivers; the consolidation of dismantled materials and
contaminated soil for final transport to authorized sites that will have to be identified by the work
managers.
