The project is scheduled to be completed in 2022 and consists of reloading the runway movement area, adding lighting and replacing wind indicators.
Specifically, two visual precision approach path indicators (PAPI) will be installed on both sides of the runway to increase safety during landing approaches. The PAPI will be installed in a fill embankment, called a mound, with a total width of 11 m and thickness of 2.1 m and 6.4 m respectively. Also, wind indicators must be replaced and the access roads to this equipment will be widened to facilitate snow removal.
The granular materials required for these works (resurfacing of the manoeuvring area, PAPI mounds, and widening of the wind-indicator access roads) will be produced on the airport site. Indeed, a rocky mound is located near the terminal, partly within the airport lease. Since the rocky mound is located on Category I lands of the Northern Village of Kangiqssujuaq, the proponent does not require, other than its lease, any rights or authorizations from MERN to mine the area. The mining of this mound will provide granular material for the project and also create space for future expansion of the buildings and movement area.
