The goal of this project is to extract the materials needed to lay the foundations for a new thermal power plant in Aupaluk, ensuring a reliable and sustainable energy source that will meet the community’s growing electricity needs. The proponent of this project was commissioned by Hydro-Québec to build the plant’s foundations. The projected site is located east of the village. The site is already partially de-capped, as it has previously housed a quarry or sandpit of approximately 2.3 ha; this project will expand the area by approximately 3.7 ha. The sandpit will produce approximately 28,000 m3 of backfill, and stripping and backfilling activities are planned.
Under Annex A of Title II of the Environmental Quality Act (EQA), any proposed borrow pit, sandpit or quarry project with an area to be stripped of 3 hectares or more is subject to the impact assessment process.
